Bangla Press Desk: The rumour of a meeting between former US Ambassador Peter Haas and top leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) spread widely, however, it could not be verified whether he was present at a hotel in Cox’s Bazar. There is widespread news that NCP’s five leaders held a meeting with Haas at the hotel Royal Tulip in Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday, however, his presence at the hotel could not be ascertained. The country’s political arena heated up following reports of the alleged meeting, coinciding with the nation’s first celebration of the July Uprising anniversary since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government. Meanwhile, NCP has dismissed the report, claiming that it is a blatant ‘rumour and media-sponsored propaganda.’
Nasir Uddin Patwary, chief coordinator of the NCP, said he, along with the party’s North and Southern Chief Organisers Sarjis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah, respectively, its Senior Joint Member Secretary Tasnim Zara and Joint Convener Khaled Saifullah (Zara’s husband), reached Cox’s Bazar by a flight around 11 am. He said the NCP leaders went to Cox’s Bazar for a pleasure trip as they were tired after completing their nationwide road march programme. “We came here just for refreshment, but as soon as we reached, we got stunned by the news that we held a meeting with Peter Haas,” he said, adding, “It is nothing but a blatant rumour and propaganda of the media.” A staff of the hotel Royal Tulip said the NCP leaders entered the hotel around 12 pm without any prior notice or booking any rooms for them.
The hotel staff, however, could not confirm whether the former US ambassador was staying at the hotel. Another staff of the hotel said a man who looked like Haas was seen at the hotel, but he could not confirm whether he was Peter Haas. While talking to the Daily Sun, several confidential sources said Peter Haas left the country on 10 April last year and there has been no information about his arrival in Bangladesh since then. Besides, several sources and online portals claimed that the former US diplomat is now residing in Washington, DC at present. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
