Poll shows public opinion supports Trump’s decision to fire Noem

DHS secretary Kristi noem

Noman Sabit: Kristi Noem’s ouster at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at the beginning of March was widely lauded by Democrats in Congress and some Republicans. A new poll finds that the majority of Americans also agree with the move.

Fifty-five percent of respondents in a YouGov survey released Tuesday said they approved of President Trump’s decision to fire the DHS secretary. The move garnered bipartisan support, with 64 percent of Democrats and 54 percent of Republicans indicating support for her firing.

Trump has nominated Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R) to replace the secretary at the end of March after the president openly expressed his discontent with a $220 million DHS ad campaign that featured Noem. Mullin’s appointment is contingent on Senate approval.

“I am super excited about this. It came as a not a complete surprise, but it came as a little bit of a surprise,” Mullin told reporters following the president’s announcement. “There’s a lot of work we can do to get the Department of Homeland Security working for the American people.”

Noem will move into a newly created position as special envoy to the “Shield of the Americas,” a security initiative among countries in the Western Hemisphere.

Her firing comes amid a shutdown at DHS as Democratic legislators continue to hold up support for a package to fund the government agency. Democrats are demanding several reforms for the department’s immigration enforcement policies.

The new YouGov survey also polled respondents on their cost of living concerns. A majority, or 53 percent, of those polled said they have seen food prices increase “a lot” in the last year, while 26 percent said they have increased “a little.”

Fifty-seven percent of respondents said they anticipate prices to increase over the next year. Only 21 percent said they believe prices will stay the same, and 11 percent expressed optimism that prices will fall in this time period.

The YouGov survey collected responses from 1,563 U.S. adults between March 6-9 with a margin of error of approximately 3.5 percentage points.
