Porwar Warns of Crisis as Govt Rejects Referendum Verdict
Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar on Saturday accused the government of deliberately driving the country towards a serious political and constitutional crisis by disregarding the referendum verdict.
Speaking on Saturday as chief guest at a seminar titled “Government Against the Referendum Verdict: The Country Faces a Crisis” at the Khulna Press Club, Porwar alleged that the authorities are creating public confusion by separating the “July Charter” from the referendum outcome.
He noted that although ministers have repeatedly pledged in Parliament to implement the July Charter, they have remained silent on the people’s direct mandate expressed through the referendum. The event was organised by the Khulna city unit of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Porwar argued that the referendum result is being undermined under the guise of the July Charter, calling it not merely a political manoeuvre but a stance against the public will. He questioned why no objections were raised in the four months preceding the vote, highlighting a timeline that included the Charter’s signing on 17 October, a presidential order on 13 November, a referendum ordinance on 25 November, and polling scheduled for February.
