Postal department to recover seized assets: Faiz

Bangla Press Desk: The government will soon begin the process of recovering encroached properties belonging to the Bangladesh Post Office, said Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, special assistant to the chief adviser in charge of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology.
He made the announcement while inaugurating a programme marking World Post Day at the postal department’s headquarters in Agargaon on Thursday.
Faiz said that following his assumption of duties, an inventory of all assets—including those under illegal occupation—had been completed, said a press release.
“We will soon begin the recovery process in coordination with divisional commissioners and deputy commissioners,” he stated.
Highlighting the need to modernise the postal system, he said the current address management structure is not suitable for a digital economy. Efforts are underway to digitalise it by incorporating area codes, street codes, and house codes with geo-fencing, using the experience of private courier services.
“We are also updating the Postal and Courier Act to ensure data security, and we hope to present the revised law to the Cabinet by November,” he added.
He further mentioned that the mail and parcel tracking system currently covers around 50–60% of deliveries. A new tracking management software is being developed to make the process almost 100% accurate.
The postal department is also taking steps to integrate its services with e-commerce, ensuring equal access in both urban and rural areas, he said.
Earlier, a colourful rally was held in front of the GPO building to mark the occasion.
As part of the two-day celebration, a seminar titled “Post for Tomorrow’s Vision” will be held this afternoon, focusing on the digital transformation and future planning of postal services.
An exhibition featuring 20 stalls and rare vintage stamps is also underway at the GPO premises and will continue until 10 October.
On the second day, students will participate in art and quiz competitions, followed by a closing and award ceremony where Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan will attend as chief guest.
During the event, Faiz also unveiled a commemorative postage stamp marking World Post Day.
The event was chaired by Abdun Naser Khan, secretary of the Posts and Telecommunications Division, and attended by Shish Haider Chowdhury, secretary of the ICT Division, SM Shahabuddin, director general of the Postal Department, and other senior officials.
