PR system a threat to country’s stability: Tarique Rahman
Bangla Press Desk:  BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has expressed concern that the demand for the proportional representation (PR) system could pave the way for fostering separatism, fascism and extremism in the country, creating instability. "We have seen that a few political parties are suddenly demanding or have become vocal in demand for proportional representation in the country. The introduction of the proportional representation system in Bangladesh means paving the way for the development of separatism, fascism and extremism in the state and politics," he said. The BNP leader came up with the statement while speaking virtually from London at a discussion arranged by Bangladesh Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital on Monday. He said the PR system election is misleading that can become or will become a cause of instability in society and government. “In the context of Bangladesh, the country's independence and sovereignty will be at stake. If we want strong unity among the people of the country, we believe that the proportional electoral system should not be introduced," he added.
Tarique Rahman said even if some parties consider raising such demand (PR system) a democratic right, people of the country, including the BNP, believe that Bangladesh is not suitable for the PR system or this electoral system. “If we look closely, the mass uprising in 2024 has once again proved it. This mass uprising has taken place itself proves one thing that if the country has to be kept free from fascism, then the unity of the people is the most important thing,” he added. At the beginning of the discussion, a one-minute silence was observed in memory of those who died in the Air Force training aircraft crash in Milestone School at Uttara in the capital and the anti-fascist movement. A documentary on the role of professionals in the movement was screened at the event. The Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad also published a memoir on the professionals of the July uprising, including the anti-fascist movement, the cover of which was also unveiled at the event.
Later, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir handed over the crest to the family members of the victims of the fascist government's oppression at different times during the movement. Due to the training plane crash in Uttara, the event was shortened at the request of Tarique Rahman, while he also instructed the party men to quickly go to the hospitals for donating blood for the injured. Chaired by Prof AZM Zahid Hossain, President of the Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad, the programme was moderated by its Member Secretary Quader Gani Chowdhury, its leaders Prof Morshed Hasan Khan, and Kaiser Kamal. BNP Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Nazrul Islam Khan, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Selima Rahman and Hafiz Uddin Ahmed were also present among others.
