Bangla Press Desk: BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has expressed concern that the demand for the proportional representation (PR) system could pave the way for fostering separatism, fascism and extremism in the country, creating instability.
"We have seen that a few political parties are suddenly demanding or have become vocal in demand for proportional representation in the country. The introduction of the proportional representation system in Bangladesh means paving the way for the development of separatism, fascism and extremism in the state and politics," he said.
The BNP leader came up with the statement while speaking virtually from London at a discussion arranged by Bangladesh Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital on Monday.
He said the PR system election is misleading that can become or will become a cause of instability in society and government. “In the context of Bangladesh, the country's independence and sovereignty will be at stake. If we want strong unity among the people of the country, we believe that the proportional electoral system should not be introduced," he added.
