President pays tribute at Martyred Intellectuals Memorial
Bangla Press Desk: President Md Sahabuddin paid tribute to the nation’s finest minds at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Mirpur, Dhaka on the occasion of Martyred Intellectuals Day.
The President laid the wreath at around 7:00am on Sunday (14 December). He then stood there in silent reflection for some time.
Martyred Intellectuals Day is one of the most tragic days in the history of the country’s independence and Liberation War. The day marks the unbearable sorrow of losing the nation’s brightest intellectuals on 14 December 1971, on the eve of victory.
At the final stage of the nine-month-long Liberation War, when the entire nation was on the threshold of ultimate victory, local collaborators—members of the Rajakars, Al-Badr, Al-Shams, and the Peace Committee—engaged in a massacre of intellectuals.
This brutal attempt to render the Bengali nation intellectually barren at the very moment of victory stunned not only the entire nation but also the whole world.
