Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has arrived in John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport
The prime minister is accompanied by his wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, and members of his delegation. On the journey from Dhaka to New York, he had a two-hour-and-35-minute layover in Istanbul, Türkiye.
Prime Minister Rahman was welcomed at the airport by Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Irene Khan and Bangladesh’s Ambassador to the United States Tareq Md Ariful Islam. Following airport formalities, he was escorted by motorcade to the Grand Hyatt hotel in Manhattan. At around 8 p.m., he was welcomed at the hotel by Bangladesh’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador A.K.M. Wahiduzzaman.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will stay at the Grand Hyatt during his visit to New York.
Following his arrival in New York, Prime Minister Rahman’s official engagements will begin on Tuesday, September 22.
In the morning, he is scheduled to attend a welcome breakfast hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres in honor of world leaders and their spouses. He will then join other world leaders at the opening of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
His schedule for the day includes meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, World Bank Group President Ajay Banga and Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé.
The prime minister is also scheduled to meet UN Special Envoy on Myanmar Julie Bishop, European Council President António Costa, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, and Meta Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan.
In the evening, he is scheduled to attend a reception hosted by the U.S. president for heads of state and government.
On September 23, Prime Minister Rahman will begin his day with a breakfast meeting at the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations with representatives of international charitable and humanitarian organizations.
He is scheduled to participate in a side event on the Rohingya crisis, where he is expected to seek effective international cooperation for the safe and speedy repatriation of the Rohingya to Myanmar.
He is also scheduled to attend a high-level meeting titled “Climate Action and the Just Transition.”
On September 24, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to address the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly on behalf of Bangladesh. It will be his first address to the UN General Assembly as head of government.
According to multiple government sources, his speech is expected at approximately 5:30 p.m. New York time, although the timing could change depending on the progress of the General Debate. He has been allocated 15 minutes for his address.
His speech is expected to cover Bangladesh’s democratic journey, the rule of law and accountability, global peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, economic cooperation, women’s and youth empowerment, education and healthcare, the Rohingya crisis, and reform of the international system.
On the same day, the prime minister is scheduled to deliver opening remarks at a high-level meeting on addressing existential threats posed by sea-level rise. He is also scheduled to speak as chief guest at a side event on maternal and newborn health and midwifery.
Alongside the UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Rahman is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with senior leaders from several countries, including Pakistan, Kuwait, Croatia, Bhutan, Thailand and Haiti.
He is also expected to meet the UN secretary-general and senior officials from various international organizations. As part of his economic diplomacy agenda, meetings are planned with senior representatives from Wall Street and companies including Meta.
According to the current itinerary, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to leave New York for Dhaka on the night of September 25.
