Protests and violence in Italy; 271 detained
Bangla Press Desk: In Milan, Italy, police have detained 271 young people following a second consecutive day of protests against poor public services and the rising cost of essential goods. Clashes broke out between protesters and the police on Sunday.
During the unrest, several shops were looted and vandalized.
Television footage showed police using tear gas and water cannons to control the situation. Meanwhile, hundreds of masked protesters set fire to trash bins in the city center. Stores belonging to brands such as Decathlon, Arc'teryx, and Vodafone were among those looted.
Authorities stated that the protests were sparked by grievances over inadequate public services and the soaring cost of living. On Monday, police confirmed that 32 of those detained in Milan have been formally arrested.
Among those arrested are 23 minors and 13 foreign nationals.
Additionally, 28 other individuals have been reported to the judicial authorities.
According to a police report, clashes between protesters and law enforcement also occurred on Saturday in several other northern Italian cities, including Bologna, Brescia, Bergamo, and Turin, where 28 protesters were arrested.
These protests in Italy—driven by discontent over poor public services and the rising cost of living—mirror similar unrest in neighboring France.
In France, a large number of people took to the streets on Saturday to protest against the rising cost of living and the deterioration of public services.
The demonstrations have been described as some of the most violent seen in recent years. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has condemned the violence that took place during the protests.
She has convened a government meeting for Monday to discuss how to address the situation—a challenge she faces while preparing for upcoming elections.
