Raid on eight-storey building in Chattogram; 63 foreign nationals detained.
Chattogram Correspondent: Police conducted a raid on an eight-story building in the Khulshi-Jalalabad area of Chattogram city, detaining 63 nationals from four different countries. Seventy electronic devices, including laptops and mobile phones, were seized from them.
A joint team comprising the Counter-Terrorism Unit and the police carried out the operation on Thursday night (September 10).
Mohammad Faisal Ahmed, Additional Police Commissioner (Crime) of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), confirmed the raid.
He stated that the operation was launched based on information regarding the presence of a large number of foreign nationals and suspicious activities within the building. Sixty-three individuals were detained, and various items—including laptops and mobile phones—were confiscated.
The CMP Additional Police Commissioner noted that the detainees include nationals from China, Pakistan, Laos, and Vietnam. Authorities are currently verifying their reasons for visiting Bangladesh, the purpose of their stay in the building, and the nature of the activities they were conducting there. Additionally, their legal documents, visa categories, and affiliations with any organizations are being scrutinized.
Sources familiar with the operation indicated that foreign nationals frequently visited the eight-story building. Law enforcement agencies had received information suggesting that, alongside large-scale financial transactions, casino-style or gambling-related activities were taking place there.
However, the police have not yet released detailed information regarding these allegations. Investigators are currently analyzing the data from the 70 seized laptops and mobile phones to determine if they contain information related to financial transactions, communications, or online activities.
Police believe that analyzing the data from these devices could yield crucial information regarding the detainees' communications, their objectives in coming to Bangladesh, and the nature of their activities within the building.
Sources associated with the operation further claimed that substantial sums of money might have changed hands at the alleged gambling den; authorities are preliminarily investigating the possibility that transactions worth crores of taka took place there.
Nevertheless, the police have not yet disclosed the specific amount of money involved or any details regarding the transactions. In addition to cash, investigators are also examining whether funds were transferred via bank accounts, online transactions, or any other means.
