Revival of RK Studios: State-of-the-Art Complex in Mumbai

Bangla Press Desk:   The iconic RK Studios, founded by legendary filmmaker Raj Kapoor, is poised for a revival in a modern avatar in suburban Mumbai. Actor Ranbir Kapoor announced in November 2025 that the Kapoor family plans to re-establish the historic studio, adapting it to contemporary filmmaking technologies.

The original RK Studios, built in 1948 on 2.2 acres in Chembur, was severely damaged by fire in 2017. The land was later acquired in 2019 by Godrej Properties for a premium residential project.Sources now indicate that members of the Kapoor family have leased five floors for 20 years in the Kanakia Wall Street complex in Andheri East, where the new studio will take shape. The facility is expected to accommodate simultaneous shooting of multiple films and include advanced virtual production stages, music and editing suites, screening theatres, and archival storage for thousands of RK memorabilia items.

In keeping with the legacy of the original studio, the new complex will also include a temple, echoing the Shiv shrine once maintained at the Chembur premises.

The studio’s operations are expected to be jointly overseen by Ranbir Kapoor and Karisma Kapoor, with office space for other members of the Kapoor family.

However, the project still awaits several regulatory approvals, including fire-safety clearance and electrical sanctions from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. Licensing for the cafeteria from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is also pending.

Once approvals are secured, the rebirth of RK Studios is expected to mark a significant moment for Mumbai’s film industry, blending cinematic heritage with cutting-edge production technology.
