Riders aim to convert momentum into glory
Bangla Press Desk: The Bashundhara Cement Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) play-offs ignite on Tuesday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, with Rangpur Riders and Sylhet Titans clashing in a high-stakes Eliminator at 1:00 pm.
For the winner, the dream of silverware stays alive; for the loser, the tournament ends here.
Rangpur enters the knockout stage buoyed by a timely resurgence. After a mid-season slump that saw them endure a three-match losing streak, the Riders found stability through a strategic captaincy switch, with national T20I skipper Litton Das taking the reins from Nurul Hasan.
The move paid immediate dividends, yielding two consecutive wins and a top-four finish.
Head coach Mickey Arthur believes his side is peaking at the right moment.
"We know we’re three games away from winning the competition," Arthur said.
"You always want to enter this stage with momentum and confidence, which we’ve got. If we play our best game, we’re good enough to beat anybody. It’s up to us to perform to our potential."
However, Captain Litton Das remains pragmatic, identifying the death overs as a critical area for refinement.
"I feel we need to improve as a bowling unit," Litton admitted, reflecting on their final group game.
"At the 14-over mark, we were in the game, but we didn’t execute our bowling plans in the final six. That consistency will be vital tomorrow."
Standing in their way is a Sylhet Titans side that has significantly bolstered its ranks for the business end of the tournament. The arrival of England’s World Cup-winning all-rounder Chris Woakes and wicketkeeper-batter Sam Billings adds immense firepower to a line-up already featuring Moeen Ali and Ethan Brookes.
Despite a loss in their final league fixture, the Titans remain bullish about their chances.
"Rangpur is a very strong team, but we are looking to play an attacking, smart brand of cricket," said Ethan Brookes following Monday’s practice session in Mirpur. "We aren't just thinking about one match; we are looking at the three games between us and the trophy."
The winner of this afternoon's clash will progress to the Second Qualifier on 21 January, while the evening’s First Qualifier sees table-toppers Rajshahi Warriors take on Chattogram Royals for a direct ticket to the final.
The BPL grand finale has been scheduled for 6:00 pm on 23 January, a slightly earlier slot designed to aid team recovery and preparation.
