Rizvi’s Rise From Chhatra Dal Activist to BNP Standing Committee Member
Bangla Press Desk: BNP’s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed has been appointed to the party’s National Standing Committee, its highest policymaking body.
The party announced his appointment in a press release issued on Saturday, saying the decision was taken to strengthen the party’s organisational activities and in line with its internal decisions.Earlier, after the BNP came to power, Rizvi was appointed on 17 February as an adviser to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman with the rank of a minister. He was also serving as the party’s senior joint secretary general.
Early life
Rizvi’s ancestral home is in Kurigram. He obtained master’s degrees in Geography and Environmental Studies and History from Rajshahi University. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in law.
Political career
Rizvi began his political career in student politics after completing higher secondary education, joining the left-leaning Revolutionary Students Union. He served as general secretary of the organisation’s Rajshahi Government College unit.
Later, after the formation of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, he joined the organisation and became publicity secretary of its Rajshahi University unit. He subsequently served as general secretary of the university unit and later became central president of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.In the 1989 Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (Rucsu) election, Rizvi was elected vice-president (VP), a position he held until 1990.
At the BNP’s sixth national council on 19 March 2016, he was elected senior joint secretary general of the party.
During the 2026 national parliamentary election, Rizvi served as member secretary of the BNP’s Election Management Committee.
His appointment to the National Standing Committee marks another significant step in his long political career, which began in student politics and has taken him to one of the BNP’s highest policymaking positions.
