Rooppur Power Plant is preparing to supply electricity to the national grid in November.
Bangla Press Desk: Efforts are underway to begin supplying electricity from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant to the national grid by next November. Initial physical and criticality tests for the project have already commenced.
Additionally, a target has been set to complete the fuel loading process—or the reactor commissioning—for the second unit by June of next year.
This information was shared on Wednesday (October 14) during the first meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Science and Technology, held at the National Parliament House, where the project's progress and future action plans were discussed.
The meeting, chaired by the committee’s president and National Parliament Whip Ruhul Quddus Talukdar Dulu, noted that stakeholders are optimistic about commencing electricity supply within the scheduled timeframe, following discussions with Rosatom, Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy corporation.
It was stated that the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is a modern, third-generation facility. The project is being executed under the supervision of experts, in compliance with international standards. Furthermore, it was noted that international energy experts have assessed the project to be on the right track.
Meanwhile, it was reported that initiatives are underway to expand nuclear medicine facilities to the district level, alongside the construction of the country’s first research vessel.
To foster an interest in science and innovation among future generations, the standing committee recommended organizing science fairs at the school and college levels.
Emphasis was also placed on taking effective measures to commercialize domestic innovations, thereby boosting exports and earning foreign currency.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Science and Technology, Fakir Mahbub Anam, along with other committee members. Also present were the Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Md. Anwar Hossain, and senior officials from relevant departments and agencies.
