Rosatom pledges to quickly supply Rooppur's electricity to the national grid.
Bangla Press Desk: Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation, Rosatom, has pledged to ensure that electricity generated on a trial basis from the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is supplied to the national grid as soon as possible.
A press release stated that this commitment was made during a high-level bilateral meeting in Moscow on Friday (October 9) between Bangladesh's Minister of Science and Technology, Fakir Mahbub Anam, and Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev.
The meeting included detailed discussions on the overall progress of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant—Bangladesh's first nuclear power project—and the timeline for electricity generation from its first unit.
During the meeting, Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev indicated that it would be possible to ensure the trial grid connection from the first unit of the plant—equipped with VVER-1200 reactors—at the earliest opportunity.
The Rosatom Director General further stated that the project would play a vital role in ensuring Bangladesh's energy security and providing eco-friendly, cost-effective energy.
Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam noted that the power plant, with a total capacity of 2,400 megawatts, would meet approximately 11 percent of the country's total electricity demand.
The Director General announced that the commissioning and initial start-up activities for the second unit would commence next year.
Additionally, the meeting featured positive discussions regarding the future expansion of the nuclear energy sector and the strengthening of bilateral cooperation, drawing upon the success and experience gained from the Rooppur project.
