Salahuddin Says Constitutional Changes Will Follow Broad Consultation

Bangla Press Desk: The BNP government will hold talks with the Opposition parties and people from all walks of life before amending the Constitution – to reflect the aspirations of the general people in the national charter, said Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Tuesday.

Salahuddin, also president of the Constitution amendment committee, was addressing reporters at the National Parliament building before the start of the first meeting of the committee.

The Committee, dominated by ruling party lawmakers, has selected the Opposition in the parliament to launch talks with stakeholders, the home minister said adding the date and potential invitees will be revealed soon.

He noted that despite high expectations from the government, the Opposition had not sent five members to the Constitution amendment committee.

The Committee is ready to welcome members from the Opposition whenever they might change their mind express the wish to join, he said.

Even if they do not join, the Committee would still consider written suggestions from the Opposition before preparing the amendment proposals, Salahuddin said.

Not only the Opposition figures and politicians, the Committee will also hold talks with people from professional groups and other walks of life, Salahuddin said.
