Shafiqur Condemns Driver’s Killing in Jatrabari
Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has condemned the alleged killing of a driver in the capital’s Jatrabari area over a dispute related to extortion.
According to allegations, the driver was beaten to death on Sunday afternoon after refusing to pay extortion money in Jatrabari.
In a post on his verified Facebook page on Sunday evening, Shafiqur said, “At approximately 3:00pm today in Jatrabari, a driver was beaten to death by extortionists over a transaction related to extortion. I strongly condemn this incident.”
He further criticised what he described as the normalisation of extortion culture, saying, “The culture of extortion has been nationalised in such a way that not paying extortion appears to be treated as a crime. When legitimacy is given to extortion from positions of leadership, the responsibility will lie with all concerned. Will innocent people continue to lose their lives like this? No, we cannot accept it and will not accept it.”The Jamaat chief called for a united movement against extortion, saying, “It is now the demand of the time to build another movement against extortion with the people. To protect lives and property from extortionists, all who love the country must fight collectively. We will continue this struggle, InshaAllah.”
