Sheetal Devi sets a world record at the Asian Games

BanglaPress Desk: Indian archer Sheetal Devi has set a world record at the Asian Para Games. In the qualification round of the women’s compound archery event, she scored 704 points out of a possible 720, matching the existing world record.
Payal Nag also delivered an outstanding performance alongside Sheetal Devi. Together, the duo secured a total of 1,379 points, claiming the top spot in the team event. China follows in second place with 1,338 points. By finishing at the top of the qualification round, India has earned a direct entry into the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals, the Indian pair will face the winner of the quarter-final match between the fifth-seeded Thailand and the fourth-seeded Kazakhstan. A victory in that match will secure their place in the medal round.
With Sheetal matching the world record and Payal making a brilliant debut, India has demonstrated its strength right from the start of the archery competition in Nagoya.
Sheetal, who hails from Jammu and Kashmir, hit a perfect 10 in 57 out of her 72 shots, including 32 ‘X’s (bullseyes). Her previous Asian record stood at 698 points; she has now shattered that mark by improving her score by six points.
Sheetal’s performance matches the world record previously set by Turkey’s Öznur Cüre Girdi, who also scored 704 points.
Sheetal, a bronze medalist at the Paris Paralympics, had previously set an Asian Para Games record by scoring 680 points at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Para Games. In that edition, she won gold in both the individual and mixed team events, and a silver in the doubles. In March of this year, she had improved her Asian record to 698 points, and now, in Nagoya, she has taken another significant step forward by matching the world record.
