Bangla Press Desk: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declined to answer questions about Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) founder Hafiz Saeed when reporters confronted him outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on Thursday during the 81st UN General Assembly.
As Sharif entered the UN headquarters, a reporter asked, “Prime Minister, when will you stop harbouring terrorists?” He did not respond. Later, as he left the headquarters, he was again asked, “When will you prosecute Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed?” Sharif again declined to answer. The exchange was reported by ANI and other media outlets.
Hafiz Saeed, the founder and chief of the banned LeT, has been named as an accused by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a supplementary chargesheet in the April 22, 2025 Pahalgam terror attack case.
The NIA said in July that Saeed had been named in the chargesheet in his individual capacity and as the chief of LeT and its active proxy organisation, The Resistance Front (TRF).
Saeed is also wanted by Indian authorities in connection with the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
India criticises Pakistan at UN
A day earlier, India criticised Pakistan at the UN Human Rights Council, with Indian diplomat Kshitij Tyagi accusing Islamabad of diverting attention from its domestic challenges.
Exercising India’s right of reply, Tyagi said Pakistan should focus on development rather than territorial claims or what he described as exporting terror.
“Pakistan would better serve its people by focusing on development, rather than by coveting territory of others or exporting terror,” he said.
Tyagi also raised allegations concerning the treatment of civilians in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, referring to reports of civilian deaths, arrests and restrictions on supplies including food, fuel and medicine.
He said Pakistan had responded to those accounts with a point of order and argued that Pakistan should itself face scrutiny by the Human Rights Council. Source: NDTV
