Sheikh Hasina responsible for Khaleda Zia’s death: Rizvi

Bangla Press Desk:   Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Friday alleged that the death of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was not natural but the result of a “premeditated killing”, holding former prime minister Sheikh Hasina responsible.

Speaking at a doa-munazat programme organised by the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Front at Dhakeshwari Temple in the capital, Rizvi claimed that Khaleda Zia was subjected to prolonged neglect and persecution during the tenure of the then government, which, he alleged, ultimately led to her death.

Rizvi said Khaleda Zia had been a vital source of courage and inspiration for democratic forces in the country, particularly during what he described as a period of fear and repression. He compared her presence to that of a guardian whose existence alone instils confidence and reassurance.

He described Khaleda Zia as a national figure who never left the country in the face of threats and said she had earned a place in the hearts of people across the nation, irrespective of religion or ethnicity.

Rizvi stressed that his remarks were not driven by emotion following her death but reflected a long-established reality, citing her speeches that emphasised equality and coexistence among all communities.

The BNP leader further alleged that Khaleda Zia entered prison in stable health but was subjected to deliberate neglect in medical care, food and treatment, which he described as part of a conspiracy to push her towards death.

He said those in charge at the time must bear responsibility for what he termed a calculated act.

Highlighting her personal qualities, Rizvi said Khaleda Zia was dignified, soft-spoken and never resorted to abusive language against her critics. He added that she exemplified honesty, commitment and responsibility in politics, setting a standard for future generations.

The programme was presided over by Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Front central committee president Aparna Roy. Several BNP leaders and activists, as well as representatives of allied organisations, were also present at the event.
