Situation in Gaza is dire, with 50 Israeli attacks daily: UN
BanglaPress Desk: Carl Skau, Acting Head of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), has described life in Gaza as "extremely dire and dangerous." According to him, UN teams have documented an average of nearly 50 Israeli attacks per day in Gaza over the past week.
Skau shared these observations with journalists during a video briefing following his recent visit to the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories—Gaza and the West Bank.
Previously, the UN reported that a severe funding crisis has forced a reduction in food assistance for 500,000 Palestinians in Gaza and 200,000 in the occupied West Bank.
Skau stated that the WFP will now prioritize providing food aid to those in greatest need. This group includes the ill, mothers and children at risk of malnutrition, and those living near the "yellow line"—a boundary marking areas under the control of Israeli forces.
The crisis has been further exacerbated by recent actions taken by the Israeli military; last week, they blocked the entry of both food and commercial goods into Gaza.
Meanwhile, Skau noted that attacks and violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank have transformed what was already a human rights and security crisis into a food crisis. He pointed out that food insecurity in the region has more than doubled over the last three years.
According to Skau’s estimates, approximately one million Palestinians in the West Bank are currently in need of food assistance.
During his visit, the WFP Acting Head witnessed burnt olive groves, refugee camps, and villages. He noted that in the first two weeks of the current olive harvest season alone, the number of attacks by settlers has already surpassed the total number of such incidents recorded throughout the entirety of last year.
