Six-Day Remand for Man Accused of Fraud

Bangla Press Desk:  A Dhaka court on Monday placed a man, Kakon Rana, 35, on a six-day remand in a case filed over allegedly committing blackmailing and fraud using the names and photographs of Prime Minister's wife Dr Zubaida Rahman and Assistant Private Secretary-2 (APS-2) Abdur Rahman Sani.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam passed the order after a hearing, said Prosecution Department Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain.Earlier, Investigating Officer of the case and Sub-Inspector Md Bipul Hossain of the DMP's Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit sought a seven-day remand for interrogating the accused.

According to the remand plea, Kakon Rana initially admitted to creating fake IDs in the names of important individuals, including the prime minister's APS-2 and the prime minister's wife under the name “Dr Zubaida Rahman”, and the Prime Minister's Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon.The fake accounts were allegedly used to send messages to various people, promising different forms of assistance and subsequently engaging in defamation, blackmailing and fraud. A case was filed on 23 August with Banani Police Station under the Cyber Security Act.

The accused needed to be interrogated to uncover the actual motive behind the offences, identify and arrest his associates or other members of the criminal gang, and recover other digital devices and SIM cards used in the offences, the plea added.
