Six Dhaka University Students Injured in Car Crash Outside Business Faculty Gate
Bangla Press Desk: Six students from the 32nd batch of the Marketing Department at the University of Dhaka were seriously injured after being hit by a car driven recklessly in front of the main gate of the Faculty of Business Studies (FBS).
The driver, identified as Sadman Sakib, son of Dr Mohammad Shahidul Islam, a teacher in the university’s Department of Mathematics, has been accused of driving without a valid licence. The injured students have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The accident occurred near the main gate of the Faculty of Business Studies. The six injured students were initially taken to the university’s Shaheed Dr Mortaza Medical Centre.
They received first aid and bandages for cuts and abrasions on various parts of their bodies, including their arms, legs and knees. One student became distressed following the sudden accident and had to be given oxygen support.
Doctors said X-ray reports would help determine whether any of the students had suffered bone fractures.
The students alleged that Sadman Sakib did not have a valid driving licence. They claimed he was learning to drive in a crowded area such as the university campus and that Tuesday was his first time behind the wheel.
They said driving recklessly without proper training or a valid licence had put the lives of six young people at risk.
The incident has sparked widespread anger among students. They said a university campus was neither a place to demonstrate personal influence nor a driving practice ground.
Accusing the university administration of failing to ensure a safe campus environment, students questioned how they could take pride in their education and conscience if justice could not be secured even after six students had been injured.
The students have demanded the highest standard of medical treatment for the injured. They have also called for a fair investigation and insisted that the accused’s identity, position or family influence must not obstruct justice.
Meanwhile, Dr Mohammad Shahidul Islam, the accused driver’s father and a teacher in the university’s Department of Mathematics, said he would accept whatever decision the university administration made regarding the incident.
