Student Politics Turns Violent as JCD, Shibir Clash Across Campuses
Bangla Press Desk: Clashes between activists of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Islami Chhatra Shibir erupted at several educational institutions in the capital, including Jagannath University (JnU), Dhaka College, and Government Alia Madrasah, leaving numerous people injured on Tuesday.
The first confrontation broke out around noon at Jagannath University during a seminar marking the second anniversary of the July Mass Uprising. The altercation began over access to the seminar venue and later escalated into physical violence between JCD activists and members of the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JnUCSU) and Jatiya Chhatra Shakti.
The clashes occurred both inside the university auditorium and later in front of the Shaheed Minar. Several JnUCSU leaders, along with activists of Shibir and Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, were injured. Some of them received treatment at National Medical College Hospital in Old Dhaka. JCD also claimed that several of its activists were injured.
Witnesses said the university had organized the seminar to commemorate the July Mass Uprising. Around 11:00 am, JnUCSU leaders and activists attempted to enter the auditorium carrying placards demanding progress on the university’s second campus, construction of temporary residential halls, improved laboratory facilities at the medical centre, and recruitment of doctors and technicians. They sought to draw the attention of University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Mamun Ahmed, who attended the seminar along with Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Md. Raich Uddin.
After the seminar concluded, another clash broke out in front of the Shaheed Minar as participants were leaving the venue. Both sides reported injuries.
Shahin Mia, president of the Jagannath University unit of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, accused JCD activists of launching the attack after the seminar. He alleged that JCD members assaulted the organisation’s General Secretary Ferdous Sheikh as well as the JnUCSU VP, GS and Assistant General Secretary (AGS).
However, Jagannath University JCD Convener Mehedi Hasan Himel alleged that Shibir and its allied groups had planned to disrupt and insult UGC Chairman Mamun Ahmed during the university programme. He claimed JCD members had politely asked them to step aside, but they refused, resulting in the clash. He also said several JCD activists were injured.
The violence later spread to National Medical College Hospital, where injured students had gone for treatment. Witnesses alleged that another attack took place inside and outside the hospital, injuring leaders, activists from various student organisations, journalists and ordinary patients. They also said activists from the JCD units of Kabi Nazrul Government College and Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College were present alongside Jagannath University JCD members.
Around 3:00 pm, fresh clashes erupted in front of the Dhaka College auditorium between activists of JCD and Islami Chhatra Shibir, leaving several people from both groups injured.
Witnesses said tensions escalated after reports of the earlier violence at Jagannath University reached the campus. At least 15 to 20 people were reportedly injured. Dhaka College JCD Member Secretary Milad Hossain claimed that at least 11 JCD activists were among the injured.
Around 3:45 pm, another series of clashes broke out at Government Dhaka Alia Madrasah in Bakshibazar over the allocation of seats in the residential hal
