Tamim questions BPL planning over absence of Chattogram matches
Bangla Press Desk: Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal expressed surprise and concern over the absence of matches in Chattogram during the ongoing Bashundhara Cement Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) on Thursday, questioning the planning behind the tournament.
Tamim pointed out that Chattogram has historically been the highest-scoring venue in the country and would have been an ideal location had the BPL been used as preparation for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Drawing comparisons with conditions in India and Sri Lanka, he noted that batting-friendly grounds in those countries regularly produce high-scoring matches that test teams under pressure.
“Bangladesh’s highest-scoring matches are probably played in Chattogram. If you look at matches played in India or Sri Lanka, those grounds also produce very high-scoring games. Since the BPL is being considered as preparation for the T20 World Cup, I am very surprised that matches are not being played in Chattogram. Chattogram is the highest-scoring venue in Bangladesh. So there is clearly a lack in planning, and it is because of that gap that such decisions are being taken,” the left-handed batter said.
The former opener suggested that the absence of Chattogram reflects shortcomings in planning rather than cricketing logic.
According to Tamim, such decisions highlight a gap in strategic thinking at a time when the BPL should serve a broader purpose beyond domestic competition.
