Tarique pledges ‘family cards’ in women’s names if elected
Bangla Press Desk: BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has said that his party will issue “family cards” offering financial or food aid under the names of female heads of households if it comes to power in the next national election. “Considering that Bangladesh has around 40 million families, we are planning – once given the opportunity – to issue family cards under the names of female heads of households, initially targeting at least 5 million marginalised families,” he said. Tarique Rahman made the announcement while virtually addressing a discussion organised by the Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal as the chief guest. The event, titled “Women’s Contribution in the Anti-Fascist Movement”, was held to mark the first anniversary of the July mass uprising. Speaking about the national election, the BNP acting chairman said that the next election is crucial for every citizen and urged women to remain vigilant so that extremism cannot resurface in the country.
“The women of our society must remain especially alert and vigilant to ensure that fascism, extremism, and militancy can never again rise in any form in this country. I call upon all the mothers and sisters of Bangladesh to stay watchful and aware,” he said. Tarique Rahman stated that over the past decade and a half, many mothers have lost their beloved children, wives have lost their husbands, sisters have lost their brothers, and countless mothers have endured torture and repression. “My mother too lost a son – Arafat Rahman Koko – just like many of you,” he said. He added that today, the opportunity has arisen for all – women, men, and children of all faiths and ethnicities – to build a humane Bangladesh following the end of fascism.
