Tarique smells conspiracy in proposal for proportional representation in Bangladesh
Bangla Press Desk: BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has urged the country’s political leaders to investigate whether there is any conspiracy behind the proposal to introduce a proportional representation system in Bangladesh. “Some political parties have already raised their demand for introducing the proportional representation system in Bangladesh. However, I would like to request everyone to consider how suitable this system is for Bangladesh in its current reality and geographical context,” he said while addressing a programme virtually from London on Tuesday. BNP organised a programme titled ‘Mass Uprising 2024: National Unity and Democratic Journey’ at the China-Bangladesh Friendship Conference Centre this afternoon. The event marked the launch of its 36-day nationwide campaign commemorating the first anniversary of the July–August mass uprising.
Tarique also called upon the countrymen to uphold the anti-fascist unity so that no hegemonic force can ever turn Bangladesh into a subservient state. “We all must uphold the anti-fascist national unity so that no force can turn our country into a subservient state and fascist force can never rear its ugly head again,” he said while addressing a programme virtually from London on Tuesday. Tarique also pledged to repay the debt of the martyrs by rebuilding a democratic country based on equity and justice. Claiming that a scope to rebuild a new Bangladesh was created through the July-August mass upsurge, he said there is no chance of committing a mistake in reaching the goal.
He also called upon the leaders of all political parties to work collectively to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the people who sacrificed their lives during the nationwide mass upsurge. Earlier, during a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner, A M M Nasir Uddin, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami called for introducing the proportional representation system ahead of the next general election.
