The UAE’s Nusseibeh is running for the post of UN Secretary-General

Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Foreign Minister of the UAE.

Bangla Press Desk: Lana Nusseibeh, the United Arab Emirates’ Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs and Special Envoy to the United Nations and the European Union, has officially entered the race to become the next UN Secretary-General. She announced her candidacy following her formal nomination by the UAE government.
This information was reported on Thursday (October 22) by Turkey’s state-run news agency, Anadolu Agency.
In a statement following her announcement, Nusseibeh noted that she has spent a significant portion of her professional career working with the United Nations. She remarked that she has witnessed firsthand what determined diplomacy can achieve.
However, Nusseibeh also acknowledged the high cost that can arise when diplomatic efforts fail. She pointed out that a widening gap between promises and concrete action erodes public trust and diminishes the capacity to deliver results. According to the Anadolu report, Nusseibeh is currently on leave from her duties with the UAE government to focus on her candidacy for the position of UN Secretary-General. The second term of the current UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, is set to conclude on December 31. Although the process to select his successor is underway, the UN Security Council has yet to reach a final decision.
The sixth round of voting on this matter took place in the Security Council on October 16. To date, no single candidate has emerged who is acceptable to all five permanent members of the Council—the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, and France.
The addition of Lana Nusseibeh’s candidacy to the selection process for the new Secretary-General introduces a new dimension to the competition.
