Three CID members, including a former inspector, placed on remand.
Bangla Press Desk: A court has granted a two-day remand for three individuals—including a former inspector—in a case involving allegations of extortion and intimidation at a jewelry shop in the capital's Tantibazar area. The accused had posed as CID officers and demanded Tk 10 lakh, alleging the shop was involved in an illegal *hundi* (informal money transfer) business.
On Sunday (October 11), Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Junaid issued the order following a petition by the investigating officer. SI Kamal Uddin of the police prosecution division confirmed the remand order.
The accused remanded are retired Inspector SM Mostak Ahmed (65), serving CID Constable Md. Hasan Sheikh (38), and Md. Abul Kalam Azad (52).
According to the case statement, the accused forcibly entered a jewelry shop named 'Ashirbad' in the Tantibazar area under Kotwali Police Station on the afternoon of October 6. Posing as CID officers, they intimidated the shop owner Liton Deb's brother and son, demanding Tk 10 lakh in extortion money and threatening to abduct them if the demand was not met.
Upon being immediately informed of the incident, a team led by Md. Enayet Kabir Shoeb, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) Kotwali Zonal Team, arrived at the scene and arrested the three individuals.
At the time of their arrest, various items were seized from them, including an ash-colored CID jacket, a pair of handcuffs, a police field cap, and an official identity card bearing a seal.
Shop owner Liton Deb filed a case at Kotwali Police Station regarding the incident. Following the filing of the case, the investigating officer—SI Md. Ejajul Haque of Kotwali Police Station—applied for a 10-day remand for the three accused on Wednesday. The court initially sent them to jail and scheduled the remand hearing for Sunday. The accused were produced in court during Sunday's hearing, where their lawyer, Advocate Abul Kalam Azad, applied for bail and the cancellation of the remand request. Sub-Inspector Kamal Uddin presented arguments in favor of the remand on behalf of the state. Following the hearing, the court granted a two-day remand for the three accused.
