Tk 4.38 Crore Found Missing From Agrani Bank Vault
Bangla Press Desk: CHATTOGRAM, Aug 13: A sum of Taka 43.8 million (4.38 crore) has been found missing from the cash vault of the Laldighi East Corporate Branch of Agrani Bank PLC, located in the Zilla Parishad building at Laldighi Par in Chattogram city.
It was detected during a routine inspection on August 9 last.
Following the incident, Mostak Ahmed, General Manager of the branch, filed a case with the Kotwali Police Station on August 10. Kamrul Hossain and Zafarullah Tanvir have been named as the accused, alongside several other unidentified individuals.
According to the case statement, Kamrul Hossain was in charge of the branch's cash and vault. On August 9, a mismatch was detected while reconciling the cash accounts and the physical cash held in the vault following the day's regular banking operations and transactions.
Subsequent verification of the accounts, vault records, and relevant documentation revealed a shortfall of Taka 43.8 million (4.38 crore). Kamrul Hossain failed to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the deficit. Later, the bank officials alleged that Kamrul Hossain, with the assistance of Zafarullah Tanvir and other unidentified individuals, had siphoned money from the bank's vault and invested it in business ventures.
Md Iqbal Hossain, Inspector (Investigation) of Kotwali thana and investigating officer of the case, said Kamrul Hossain (41) and Zafarullah Tanvir (25) -- two accused named in the FIR on misappropriation of the money from a customer -- were arrested. They were produced before a court on Thursday and it sent them to jail. Two mobile phones and a 64GB pendrive containing records of WhatsApp communications and data were seized from their possession. Investigation into the case was ongoing.
