Today is World Standards Day.
Bangla Press Desk: Today, Wednesday (October 14), marks the 57th World Standards Day. This day is observed globally every year to raise awareness about the importance of standards for products and services.
The theme for this year is "Shared vision for a better world—Affordable and Clean Energy." The three major global standards organizations—the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)—are jointly observing the day. Like other countries around the world, Bangladesh is also marking the occasion through various programs.
This year's theme emphasizes Goal 7 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Affordable and Clean Energy. Achieving this goal requires not only energy production but also ensuring its optimal use. International standards play a crucial role in ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.
To address this challenge, the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI)—the national standards body—has formulated 79 Bangladesh Standards covering solar panels, inverters, charge controllers, and batteries to ensure the durability and effectiveness of solar power systems.
These standards are regularly updated to align with international benchmarks. To date, BSTI has formulated a total of 4,631 Bangladesh Standards.
BSTI maintains a solar panel testing laboratory at its headquarters to verify product quality. This facility is capable of testing solar panels with a capacity of up to 1,000 watts using a state-of-the-art sun simulator based on German technology. By adhering to international guidelines and utilizing advanced light sources and calibrated equipment, the laboratory verifies the performance and quality of solar panels.
BSTI has undertaken various programs to mark World Standards Day. As part of the observance, discussion meetings and promotional activities will be held at the head office as well as at divisional and regional offices. Special interview-based discussion programs have been organized on Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar. Additionally, arrangements have been made to send text messages to mobile phones through the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). Banners, festoons, and placards have been displayed at various key locations across the capital.
To mark the occasion, a discussion meeting organized by BSTI will be held on Wednesday at 10:50 AM at the Officers' Club in Dhaka.
Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Minister of Industries, Commerce, and Textiles & Jute, will attend the event as the chief guest. Abdun Naser Khan, Secretary of the Ministry of Industries, and Professor Dr. S. M. Abdul-Awal, Principal Coordinator (SDG Affairs) at the Prime Minister's Office, will be present as special guests.
Furthermore, Md. Fazlul Haque, Administrator of the FBCCI, will serve as the keynote speaker at the meeting. Kazi Imdadul Haque, Director General (Secretary) of BSTI, will preside over the event.
