Tofazzal Murder Case: Two accused granted bail after surrender
Bangla Press Desk: A Dhaka court on Sunday granted bail to two accused after they surrendered in a case filed over allegations of beating to death a mentally unstable youth, Tofazzal Hossain, in September 2024.
The accused – Md Abu Raihan, 23, and Redwanur Rahman Parvez, 24 – are resident students of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall at Dhaka University.Confirming the matter, state prosecutor Md Harun Or Rashid said the two surrendered through their lawyer and applied for bail, which the prosecution opposed.
Following arguments from both sides, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain granted them bail on bonds of Tk5,000 each until the next hearing.
According to the case, on 18 September 2024, around 7:45pm, Tofazzal was beaten to death on suspicion of theft at Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall.
On 19 September, a case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station by Mohammad Amanullah, a supervisor of the university’s estate office.
After the investigation, police submitted a charge sheet to the court on 30 December 2024, accusing 21 students of Dhaka University.
However, the university authorities filed a petition rejecting the charge sheet, citing flaws in the investigation.
On 26 February 2025, the court ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to reinvestigate the case.
Later, on 15 December last year, PBI submitted a fresh charge sheet against 28 individuals, including seven new accused.
