Traditional student politics must end: Tarique
BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman has called for an end to traditional forms of student politics, urging youth to focus instead on leadership, development, and nation-building. Speaking as the chief guest at a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal rally held in Shahbagh on Sunday to mark the anniversary of the July Uprising, Tarique addressed party activists virtually, stressing the need for political reform and forward-thinking leadership. “We must move away from traditional student politics,” he said, adding “Let the first vote of our youth be for the sheaf of paddy (BNP’s electoral symbol). We must replace the politics of rhetoric with the politics of improving people’s lives. Only qualified leadership can build the country, and we must create the Bangladesh that our martyrs dreamed of.” Tarique praised the role of JCD activists in last year's uprising, noting their sacrifices.
“The people of this country are the true source of political power — for the BNP and for all. During the July Uprising, hundreds of Chhatra Dal activists were injured, and over 2,000 were arrested. No one can suppress a movement filled with brave sons like you,” he said. He emphasised that Bangladesh has matured significantly in the 54 years since independence. “The country no longer wants division. We are not here for empty political talk — we have begun a politics focused on improving lives.” In his message to students, Tarique stressed the importance of skills and technical education. “To compete globally, we must acquire technical knowledge and practical skills. If the BNP returns to power, technical education will be introduced from the school level,” he said. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
