Triple murder in Italy: Mother still doesn't know her only son is not alive
Noakhali Correspondent: Jahanara Begum, who is about 60 years old, has a son and five daughters. All her dreams, trust and survival revolved around her only son Kamal Uddin Babul. Even though that son was abroad, he would call every day, check on his mother, and assure her that he would be by her side when he returned home. But Babul was killed along with his wife and five-year-old daughter in a brutal murder that took place in the Italian capital Rome. However, the whole truth has not yet reached the mother in a remote village in Noakhali. She still believes that her son is alive and will return one day after recovering.
On Saturday (June 27) afternoon, when she visited the house of the deceased Kamal Uddin Babul in Bijoynagar area of Charkankara Union of Companiganj Upazila of Noakhali, the entire family was stunned by grief. Mother Jahanara Begum is sitting at home lamenting. Wiping away tears, she repeatedly says, "My Babul will come back, my Babul will not be harmed."
Hearing his plea, relatives around him also burst into tears. Family members said that considering the mother's physical condition, she has not yet been clearly informed about her son's death. It has only been said that Babul is seriously ill and hospitalized.
According to locals, Kamal Uddin Babul migrated to Italy in 2010 with the help of his cousin's son-in-law Amin Ulya in search of a livelihood. Before going abroad, he married Momtaz Begum Arzu from the same union. Over time, a son Ayan and a daughter Arisha were born to their family. Through the long struggle of his life in exile, he built a happy family in Italy with his wife and children. Family members had hoped that Babul would return to the country and settle permanently after a few years. But that dream was shattered in an instant last Friday night.
The horrific incident took place in the Via Montilio area of Casalotti, a suburb of Rome, around 8 pm on Friday, Italian local time. Kamal Uddin Babul, his wife Arju Begum and their five-year-old daughter Arwa Islam Arisha were killed. Their son Ayan, who is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital, was seriously injured.
Local sources and relatives claim that the murder was committed due to a dispute between Shahadat Hossain and Babul, who are from the same village, over Babul's wife. According to them, there was a family dispute over Shahadat's close relationship with Arju since they were in the country. Later, Babul took his wife and children to Italy to resolve the situation. On the other hand, Shahadat Hossain migrated to the UK with his family about four years ago. It is known that he moved to Italy after the family separated.
Relatives claim that on the day of the incident, a meeting was held with Shahadat in the presence of Kamal Uddin, his wife and children to resolve the family dispute. At one stage of the meeting, when an argument broke out, Shahadat attacked with a sharp weapon. Kamal, his wife and baby daughter were killed on the spot. The injured Ayan managed to escape to save his life, his relatives said.
After the incident, suspect Shahadat Hossain allegedly posted a status on his Facebook account. There, he wrote, “A person does not only die alone, but also leaves others to die. Therefore, when dying, one should also die with their loved ones. That way, no one has to suffer for anyone.”
On Saturday, Italian law enforcement released a photo of Shahadat, identifying him as the main suspect in the triple murder case and appealing to the public for information about his whereabouts.
Shahadat's elder brother, Saudi expatriate Ismail Hossain Harun, said, "Four years ago, Shahadat sold all his properties and moved to the UK with his family. Since then, he has had no contact with his family. I came to the country two months ago, and I have not spoken to him during this time either."
Sirajul Islam, father of the deceased Kamal Uddin, said that when he came to the country about a year ago, a letter was sent threatening to kill his son. He also claimed that the matter was verbally reported to the Companiganj police station. We were still scared then. But we did not think that we would lose our son like this.
According to Italian media reports, on Friday night, locals heard screams from the park area and informed the police. Later, the police recovered the bodies of the three from the scene. The initial assumption of the investigating officers is that they were killed with sharp weapons.
Now, there is only crying and waiting in that house in Charkankara. On one hand, the pain of losing their beloved child, and on the other hand, the death of their daughter-in-law and granddaughter has broken down in grief. However, the biggest tragedy may still be known. No Jahanara Begum. She is still waiting for her Babul to knock on the door one day and say, "Mom, I have come." But that wait has no end.
Companyganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Nurul Hakim said, "At that time, the victim's family verbally informed the police about the matter. After that, the police monitored their safety through regular patrols."
