Trump upset over Bangladesh's 'buffalo controversy': Did not issue Eid greetings for Muslims

Bangladesh’s widely discussed “Donald Trump buffalo” controversy

Chhabed Sathee: Although it has long been customary for U.S. presidents to issue greetings on major Muslim holidays, President Donald Trump did not release an Eid-al-Adha message for Muslims this year. Some observers have jokingly linked the silence to Bangladesh’s widely discussed “Donald Trump buffalo” controversy.

Eid-al-Adha was observed across the United States and around the world on May 27. However, unlike previous years, Trump did not issue a public Eid greeting.

Earlier this year, on February 17, at the beginning of Ramadan, Trump acknowledged the significance of the holy month in a message, saying, “I extend my greetings and best wishes to everyone observing Ramadan.”

He also issued an Eid-al-Fitr message to Muslims worldwide on March 18.

While the White House hosted a high-profile iftar dinner last year, Trump did not release a separate Eid-al-Fitr message this year either. Some have humorously speculated that his failure to issue an Eid-ul-Adha greeting may be linked to the now-famous buffalo in Bangladesh named “Donald Trump.” The White House press secretary has also not issued any statement regarding Eid.

The speculation stems from a rare albino buffalo in Bangladesh that became a social media sensation ahead of Eid-ul-Adha after being nicknamed “Donald Trump.” The animal attracted widespread attention in Bangladesh and abroad and became one of the most talked-about sacrificial animals of the season.

The buffalo’s owner recently took it home from the farm amid considerable public interest. However, just before Eid, authorities announced that the animal would not be sacrificed. Instead, the government decided to preserve it because of its rarity.

According to reports, police took custody of the buffalo following instructions from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Home Affairs Adviser Salahuddin Ahmed later said that he personally purchased the buffalo and that the government intends to preserve the rare animal.

“The buffalo that went viral under the name Donald Trump is a rare species,” he said. “It became a social media sensation before Eid, and there were concerns about possible disorder during the sacrifice period. That is why I purchased it. It is currently at a farm and may later be placed in a zoo.”

During his first term, Trump issued his first Eid-al-Fitr greeting on May 23, 2020, one day before Eid was celebrated in the United States that year. He sent a message recognizing the Muslim religious holiday and extending greetings to Muslim communities.
