Trump’s $2,000 checks dash the hopes of many Americans
Ema Alice: President Trump proposed $2,000 “tariff rebate” payments for taxpayers earning under $100,000, saying the checks would come from tariff revenue and possibly help pay down debt.
Trump posted to Truth Social, “All money left over from the $2000 payments made to low and middle income USA Citizens, from the massive Tariff Income pouring into our Country from foreign countries, which will be substantial, will be used to SUBSTANTIALLY PAY DOWN NATIONAL DEBT.”
Administration officials have offered only tentative eligibility guidance. “We’ve taken in hundreds of billions of dollars in tariff money. We’re going to be issuing dividends…probably the middle of next year, a little bit later than that, of thousands of dollars for individuals of moderate income, middle income,” Trump said.
If limited to households earning under $100,000, the policy would exclude a sizable share, since the 2024 median family income was $108,600.
Tax Foundation analysts warn the plan would likely increase the federal deficit—estimated cost about $280 billion for filers and spouses—because tariff receipts to date, which are approximately 117 billion, fall far short of funding the payments.
Tax experts from the Tax Foundation said, “Under nearly any design option, sending out $2,000 payments to Americans would increase, not decrease, the federal budget deficit. A better way to provide relief from the burden of tariffs would be to eliminate the tariffs.”
