Trump’s Public Support in Doubt Ahead of Midterms
Bangla Press Desk: US President Donald Trump’s popularity is declining amid the war with Iran, while Republican leaders face mounting pressure to retain their party’s narrow majorities in Congress in November’s midterm elections.
The conflict, which began with US and Israeli attacks on Iran in February this year, has had a significant impact on American politics. According to a recent Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll, nearly 60% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the situation in Iran. The group also includes one in four Republican supporters.
Meanwhile, the war has driven up petrol prices significantly across the United States.
Fuel costs are rising at a time when the cost of living remains voters’ biggest concern. Trump has repeatedly said he expects oil prices to fall after the elections. However, he has yet to present a detailed plan for ending the war.
In recent weeks, the United States and Iran have exchanged proposals aimed at ending the conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy shipments.
Trump has rejected Tehran’s latest proposal. In response, Iran made clear on Thursday that it would not suspend uranium enrichment or hand over its uranium stockpile, according to state media, citing the head of the country’s Atomic Energy Organization.
A few days earlier, US Vice President JD Vance told Reuters that Iran would have to significantly reduce its uranium enrichment capabilities to bring the war to an end.
The United States, Israel and their Western allies have long accused Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran has denied the allegations.
