Trump's special envoy Sergio Gore to visit Dhaka for first time

Bangla Press Desk: US President's Special Envoy for Central and South Asia Sergio Gore is visiting Dhaka for the first time with the aim of strengthening Bangladesh-US bilateral relations.
He is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on Thursday (July 30) afternoon.
During his visit to Dhaka, he will meet Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman. In addition, he will exchange views with leaders of various political parties, professionals and representatives of civil society. Gore will visit Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar.
Sources say that the main objective of Sergio Gore's visit may be to discuss the government's foreign policy priorities in Bangladesh and the Dhaka-Washington relationship. In particular, Washington may want to understand and learn about Bangladesh's foreign policy in the context of recent regional diplomatic activities.
Diplomatic sources say that after the formation of the BNP government in February, the Prime Minister's visit to China in June, the Foreign Minister's visit to Moscow in the same month, and the Turkish Foreign Minister's visit to Dhaka, the international community's interest in Bangladesh's strategic position has increased. In that context, Washington mainly wants to understand and know Dhaka's foreign policy.
Diplomatic sources also say that Sergio Gor is serving as the Trump administration's special envoy for South and Central Asia, as well as the ambassador to India. He may inquire about the progress of Bangladesh's relations with the Narendra Modi government, especially the Dhaka-Delhi relationship. Perhaps he can convey a message to the Bangladesh government to the Indian government. On the other hand, Washington may want to understand Bangladesh's involvement with China in the last few months and Bangladesh's attitude towards it. In addition, the country may want to know about Bangladesh's diplomatic activities with Moscow and Ankara.
After the BNP government took office in February, US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Paul Kapoor and Assistant Trade Representative for South and Central Asian Affairs Brendan Lynch visited Bangladesh in March and May, respectively.
Recently, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Manila. Sergio Gore was present at the meeting. During the meeting, both sides discussed ways to further strengthen US-Bangladesh bilateral relations.
