Two injured after shot by federal agents in Portland
Ema Alice: Two people were shot and injured by federal agents Thursday in Portland, Ore., according to authorities.
Portland police said they responded to a call on a shooting and found a man and a woman with gunshot wounds. Both were in the hospital, and their conditions weren’t known, police said. The Department of Homeland Security said a U.S. border-patrol agent fired his gun after a driver attempted to run over officers during a vehicle stop in Portland related to immigration-enforcement action. The agency said the driver and passenger are affiliated with a Venezuelan gang and left the scene.
The shooting comes a day after a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot a woman during an operation in Minneapolis.
“We are still in the early stages of this incident,” said Portland Police Chief Bob Day. “We understand the heightened emotion and tension many are feeling in the wake of the shooting in Minneapolis, but I am asking the community to remain calm as we work to learn more.”
Portland’s mayor condemned the shooting and called for ICE to leave the city.
“We cannot sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts,” Mayor Keith Wilson said. “Portland is not a ‘training ground’ for militarized agents, and the ‘full force’ threatened by the administration has deadly consequences.”
