Bangla Press Desk: Two people were killed and at least eight others injured after a boundary wall of Mirpur University College collapsed onto people waiting in a queue to buy subsidised goods from a Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) truck sale in the capital's Mirpur-2 area on Tuesday.
The accident, which also left at least eight people injured, occurred at around 1:15 pm when a section of the eight-foot-high boundary wall of Mirpur University College collapsed.
One of the deceased was identified as Nasima Begum, a resident of Janata Housing in Mirpur-2. The identity of the other victim could not be confirmed immediately.
The injured, including two in critical condition, were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) for treatment.
Officials at Mirpur Model Police Station said buyers had been queuing along the college's boundary wall since the morning to purchase TCB goods.
The wall suddenly collapsed, leaving several people in the queue seriously injured. They were rescued and taken to different hospitals.
Officer-in-Charge of Mirpur Model Police Station Hafizur Rahman confirmed the incident to reporters.
Witnesses said people had been waiting in the queue since morning. The boundary wall collapsed with a loud crash, triggering panic among those waiting nearby.
Contacted by The Financial Express, Mirpur Model Police Station Duty Officer Sub-Inspector Ashikur Rahman said no case had been filed over the incident as of 8:00 pm.
"An investigation is underway. It will be decided whether any cases will be filed against those found responsible for the accident," he said.
Police were also trying to establish the identity of the second victim, the officer added.
