Typhoon ‘Champi’ strikes Taiwan: 1 dead, over 500 injured
BanglaPress Desk: One person has died and over 500 others have been injured in Taiwan following the impact of the powerful Typhoon 'Champi'. This was reported by the British news agency Reuters.
According to the report, the storm, which swept across the island nation on Saturday (October 24), brought strong winds and heavy rainfall, causing widespread disruption to power and communication systems.
Reuters reported that one individual died after being swept away by rough waves during the storm. Additionally, the typhoon’s fury led to trees being uprooted across various locations. At one point, more than 167,000 households lost power, though electricity has since been restored to most areas. Transportation—both by road and air—was also severely affected; according to Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation, 242 flights were cancelled on Saturday.
Approximately 1,000 flights had already been cancelled the previous day, Friday (October 23). In the capital, Taipei, the storm brought heavy rain accompanied by intense winds. As a safety precaution, schools and offices remained closed for the second consecutive day across large parts of northern and central Taiwan, including Taipei. Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration stated that the super typhoon—one of the strongest of the year—weakened after passing over the country’s northeastern coast. Currently, wind speeds near the storm's center are approximately 126 kilometers per hour.
After moving past Taiwan, Champi has turned northward and is now heading toward the Chinese coast. There are concerns that it could subsequently impact southern Japan.
