Bangla Press Desk: After another successful campaign, the Bangladesh U-20 women’s football team have returned home in triumphant fashion. Having booked their place in the AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup finals, the players arrived in Dhaka at 1:30am on Monday night.
Bangladesh Football Federation’s (BFF) head of women’s wing Mahfuza Akhter Kiron was present at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to welcome the team. She was joined by four BFF executive committee members — Amirul Islam Babu, Tipu Sultan, Mohammad Manzurul Karim, and Shakhawat Hossain Bhuiyan Shaheen.
The players were greeted with flowers on behalf of the BFF. However, no formal reception was arranged, and it remains uncertain whether there will be one. This stands in contrast to the grand midnight celebration held on 7 July at Hatirjheel to honour the senior women’s team for also qualifying for the Asian Cup. Although Afeida Khandaker and her teammates achieved the same feat, the reception this time was noticeably more modest.
The AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup will be held in Thailand in April next year. For the first time ever, Bangladesh will compete in the 12-team finals. In Laos, the red-and-greens finished as runners-up in Group H to book their spot. They began their campaign on 6 August with a 3-1 win over hosts Laos, followed by an 8-0 victory against Timor-Leste.
