Abu Sabet: ICE officers to have Olympics security role Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers are expected to help with security at the Milano-Cortina Winter Games in Italy.

Agents will join the international band of law enforcement securing the Olympic event, according to two officials at the U.S. Embassy in Rome, The Associated Press reported.

However, Italian officials have decried ICE’s presence in the midst of national outrage after the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good at the hands of federal agents in Minnesota this month amid President Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

“This is a militia that kills, a militia that enters into the homes of people, signing their own permission slips,” Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala said during an interview with RTL Radio 102, according to the AP. “It is clear they are not welcome in Milan, without a doubt.”

His comments were made prior to the confirmation of ICE’s attendance at the games, first reported by the Italian daily il Fatto Quotidiano.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi on Saturday said he doesn’t “see what the problem would be” if ICE officers helped to secure the games, AP reported.

In previous years, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sent its investigative unit, the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), to provide security support during the Olympics, according to the news wire.
