Bangla Press Desk: Police in the U.S. state of Illinois have arrested a 19-year-old man, Alexandros Paporakis—a resident of Palatine—on charges of plotting an attack on a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area.
Authorities launched an investigation after receiving reports that he was planning a mass shooting. During the probe, they discovered a document written by Paporakis that espoused white supremacist ideology and contained references to committing violence against people of Indian origin. Based on this evidence, he was taken into custody.
According to NDTV, the incident occurred around the start of the Hindu festival of Navratri. It follows an act of vandalism that took place just two weeks earlier at the Shree Swaminarayan Vadtal Dham Hindu Temple in Richmond Heights, Ohio. Paporakis appeared in the Cook County Third Municipal District Court in Rolling Meadows on Wednesday, where a judge ordered him to be held in detention. His next court hearing is scheduled for October 30.
Paporakis worked as a cashier at a Taco Bell restaurant in Palatine. The investigation began after an individual reported that Paporakis was planning a mass shooting. According to investigators, Paporakis had shared a document detailing the planned attack with this individual, along with photographs of a rifle, a loaded magazine, body armor, and other equipment. Police stated that, based on the evidence gathered, Paporakis may have intended to carry out an attack on October 11, targeting a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area. The specific location he intended to target remains under investigation.
It is alleged that Paporakis told his colleagues at Taco Bell that Sunday would be a "special day." Investigators reported that on the morning of that day, he called a coworker to say that his gun had jammed, after which he quickly left the scene before anyone could notice. Palatine Police Chief William Nord stated that the gravity of this alleged threat cannot be understated. Ensuring the security of places of worship remains a top priority for law enforcement. Police examined Paporakis’s electronic communications and a document he authored, titled "Why I Fought: The Manifesto of the Aurora Attacker." The document contained white supremacist and extremist ideologies, including references to violence against people of South Asian descent—specifically those of Indian origin.
On the evening of October 11, officers from the Palatine and Mount Prospect police departments conducted a joint operation and located Paporakis, taking him into custody as he was leaving his home. A subsequent search of his residence led to the recovery of a rifle, multiple loaded magazines, hundreds of additional rounds of ammunition, tactical gear, and other items believed to be relevant to the investigation. The Palatine and Mount Prospect police departments alerted the Aurora Police Department regarding the potential attack and also reached out to the authorities of Hindu places of worship in their respective jurisdictions to warn them of the planned assault.
Paporakis has been charged with making threats of a terrorist attack and illegal possession of weapons—a charge that includes the possession of a rifle with a barrel length of less than 16 inches. The Palatine Police stated that the investigation is ongoing and that they are working closely with the FBI. Authorities are also evaluating whether additional charges should be filed against Paporakis.
However, officials have indicated that there is currently no information suggesting an ongoing threat to the general public. Palatine Police Chief William Nord noted that the suspect was identified and apprehended thanks to the rapid exchange of information and coordinated action between the two police departments.
Following the incident, the Hindu American Foundation, in a post on the social media platform X, commended law enforcement for their swift response. The organization stated that community members must remain vigilant and report any potential threats to the authorities. Every community has the right to worship without fear.
In another post, the foundation claimed that Paporakis, who was heavily armed, was already present at the Hindu temple and attempted to open fire. However, the post notes that he was unable to do so because his gun jammed.
The foundation asserts that Paporakis described himself as a white supremacist neo-Nazi—an individual filled with hatred and alienated from society. The organization further stated that he would fantasize about carrying out mass killings almost every day.
