Voting in DUCSU, hall polls begins

Bangla Press Desk: Voting in the long-anticipated Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and hall union elections has commenced amid much enthusiasm and festivity after a six-year hiatus. Balloting starts at 8:00 am on Tuesday (9 September) across eight polling centres amid tight security and will continue uninterrupted until 4:00 pm. After visiting the campus area in the morning, it has been found that students were in long queue in front of the polling centres to cast their votes even before voting began. The election is being held at eight centres of the campus -- and for the first time, outside the dormitories -- with nearly 40,000 registered voters and 471 candidates vying for 28 central posts.

This year, the total number of DUCSU voters is 39,874. Of them, 18,959 are from five female dormitories, while 20,915 are from 13 male dormitories. A student would have to cast votes for 41 positions -- 28 in DUCSU and 13 in hall unions. Apart from 471 candidates vying against DUCSU’s 28 positions, 1,035 candidates are running for 234 posts of 18 hall unions. There are around 810 polling booths in the eight centres. The campaign period officially ended yesterday with processions, poster campaigns, and lively debates that filled the campus with energy.

According to the DUCSU Election Commission, all necessary preparations have been finalized. Eight voting booths have been set up in different areas of the campus, with special measures in place to ensure a smooth and transparent election process. The eight voting booths have been placed at Senate Building, University Club, Udayon School, University Laboratory School, University Gymnasium, TSC, Curzon Hall and Geography department. To ensure transparency of the vote counting, the authority, for the first time, has decided to display live of vote counting. Security forces have been deployed in and around the campus to ensure a safe and secure poll.

To avoid overcrowding and ensure a secure environment, authorities have decided to restrict entry to the university campus from 8 pm today. Only registered students, election officials, and authorized personnel will be allowed inside the campus and polling venues. Law enforcement officers will conduct ID checks at all entry points. The DMP also issued a notice for the vehicles to use alternative routes avoiding DU campus as the vehicle movement restriction inside the campus area will be maintained strictly. The last DUCSU election was held in 2019 after a 28-year hiatus, and this year’s election is being closely followed not just within academic circles but across the nation due to its significance in shaping future leadership.
