Warriors and Royals clash for spot in final
Bangla Press Desk: Rajshahi Warriors and Chattogram Royals are set to lock horns on Tuesday in the first qualifier of the Bashundhara Cement Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), with both sides entering the play-offs in sharply contrasting form.
While Rajshahi arrive on the back of four successive victories, Chattogram have stumbled with two recent defeats—though the Royals had already secured their play-off berth before those losses.
The stakes at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium are high: the winner advances directly to the grand finale, while the loser receives a second lifeline in the second qualifier against either Rangpur Riders or Sylhet Titans.
The Warriors finished the league stage as table-toppers, winning eight of their ten fixtures. New Zealand all-rounder Jimmy Neesham believes the squad is peaking at the right time.
"We’re very confident. Finishing top of the table is the first goal at the start of any competition, and we’ve achieved that," Neesham told the media on Monday.
"We’ve earned the right to have a second chance in the finals if we do lose that first game, but it’s a new game tomorrow. Both teams start even. Hopefully, we can continue the form we’ve had over the last few games."
Neesham, who had a brief stint with last year's champions Fortune Barishal, is relishing a more central role this season.
"This year has been a new experience with a more significant contribution. Now, with a top-two finish, we’ve given ourselves a really good chance to push into the final."
In the opposing camp, Chattogram’s Pakistani recruit Aamer Jamal insists that "fearless cricket" will be the key to toppling the formidable league leaders.
"The key is to play fearless cricket. When we won those games, it was because we played without fear," Jamal told reporters.
"We even won a couple of games with nine wickets in hand. Sometimes, when a batsman is struggling, doubts creep in. That’s why I always encourage fearless cricket."
Rajshahi and Chattogram shared the spoils in the league phase, winning one game apiece against each other with both matches turning out to be low-scoring thrillers.
