Xavi’s application for India coach was a hoax, confirms AIFF
Bangla Press Desk:  The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has confirmed that a job application purportedly sent by former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez for the Indian national team head coach position was a hoax. Speculation emerged earlier this week when an AIFF official told The Times of India that Xavi was among the applicants for the role. A member of the AIFF’s technical committee had even claimed that his candidacy was considered too costly to pursue. However, the AIFF clarified the situation in an official statement on Saturday:
“The AIFF received an email furnishing applications from Spanish coaches Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez. The authenticity of their applications could not be confirmed, and it has since emerged that the email applications were not genuine.”
This is the first time it has been publicly revealed that an application was also submitted in the name of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola. The AIFF’s technical committee had reviewed 170 applications for the vacant men’s national team head coach role, eventually narrowing it down to a shortlist of three. The coaching position became vacant after the sacking of Igor Stimac in June last year. Spaniard Manolo Márquez was appointed shortly after but stepped down this month to return to Indian Super League side FC Goa. The federation is expected to name a new head coach soon, amid continued interest in Indian football’s evolving future. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
