Yale to offer free tuition for families earning under $200,000
Yale University, CT
Ema Alice: Yale University announced Tuesday that families with an income below $200,000 will get free tuition, following other highly ranked schools who have unveiled generous financial packages in recent years.
The change, which will go into effect the 2026-2027 academic year, will give families making less than $200,000 scholarships to cover tuition — and those whose incomes are less than $100,000 will have all costs eliminated, including housing and meal plan.
“I am thrilled that Yale is making this important investment in affordability,” said Dean of Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid Jeremiah Quinlan. “With this announcement, we reiterate and reinforce Yale’s commitment to ensuring that cost will never be a barrier between promising students and a Yale College education.”
The announcement says 50 percent of American households with school-aged chidlren would be eligible for a zero-cost education at Yale.
Currently, 56 percent of the undergraduate class at Yale receive need-based aid and 1,000 students qualify for a no-cost degree. Yale currently has a $90,000 a year sticker price.
“Yale makes a special effort to support students with the greatest financial need,” said Kari DiFonzo, director of undergraduate financial aid. “Beyond generous financial aid offers, Yale provides extra grants for students to purchase winter clothing, to pursue summer experiences abroad, and to respond to unexpected financial hardships.” The announcement follows other prestigious universities such a Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology announcing more generous financial aid packages for lower income students.
