Zaima highlights women’s safety in Bangladesh

Bangla Press Desk:  Zaima Rahman has underscored the importance of security—particularly for women—as a defining challenge for Bangladesh, saying it remains the most striking difference between living in London and living in Dhaka.

In a Facebook post, she said people often ask her about the biggest difference between staying in London and Dhaka, and her answer consistently comes down to one issue: security.

She reflected on what “security” truly means for young people in Bangladesh, especially in their everyday lives.

Zaima noted that when a woman faces online harassment or feels unsafe while moving on the streets, it is not merely an individual problem.

Such experiences, she said, gradually affect society as a whole. Fear begins to shape people’s behaviour—where they go, what they say, and even what they write online—often forcing individuals to remain silent or withdraw from public life.

She argued that meaningful change can begin with small but practical steps. These include ensuring a safer online environment, providing easy and confidential remedies for victims of harassment, introducing effective education on digital behaviour and safety, and guaranteeing that women can move freely and without fear in public spaces.

According to Zaima, when women feel safe in their daily lives, the benefits extend beyond them. A safer environment for women, she said, ultimately allows everyone in society to live with greater comfort, confidence, and peace of mind as citizens.
