Zinnat marks national debut in style with gold
Bangla Press Desk: Mohammad Ali Boxing Stadium witnessed a fierce yet graceful performance by US-based boxer Zinnat Ferdous as she clinched gold in the women’s 52kg final at the National Boxing Championships on Thursday. For the past few days, Zinnat Ferdous has been the most talked-about name in the local sporting circles. Making her debut in a Bangladeshi ring, the US-raised boxer didn’t disappoint — and lived up to the hype in emphatic fashion. Facing off against Afra Khandaker at the Mohammad Ali Boxing Stadium in Paltan, Zinnat displayed why she has been considered a class apart. From the opening bell, she went on the offensive, combining speed with sharp footwork and confident defence. Afra, meanwhile, fought valiantly to stay in the contest, trying to absorb the onslaught while looking for counter-punches. She wobbled momentarily from a few telling blows but never gave up. In fact, she managed to sneak in a few return shots of her own, even if the pressure remained squarely on her.
In the crowd was Bangladesh women’s national football team captain and Afra’s elder sister, Afieeda Khandaker, cheering her on alongside their parents. But even the full support of her family couldn’t shift the tide against Zinnat’s clinical performance. After the bout, Afra said, “She’s a very good player. It was a new experience for me to fight someone like her — especially with her attacking skills. After the match, she hugged me and said, ‘Good fight.’” Zinnat, speaking to reporters after her win, said, “I want to tell everyone that Bangladeshi boys and girls want to play. If they are given facilities and opportunities, they can do very well. They have the skills.” Asked which match was tougher — the semi-final against Ashia or the final against Afra — she replied, “I played my game and I won. They were both different kinds of opponents.” This article was originally published on Daily Sun. [Bangla Press is a global platform for free thought.
