Omar Sani is one of the most endearing faces in Bangladeshi Cinema. Being one of the most recognisable figures from the 90s, he still excites the audience by any of his now sporadic appearances on television and the big screen. Today is Omar Sani’s birthday, and The Daily Star has recently caught up with the famed actor to find out what has been planned for this special occasion.
What do you plan to do today?
Omar Sani: I have no idea because my children, Fardin and Faiza are in charge of such occasions. They’re sharing their plans with only my wife, Moushumi, but I do know that they’re planning a large get together with friends from the film industry.
Since you’ve began your career, what has been the most memorable celebration so far?
Omar Sani: That will be the one about to happen today, because we have not celebrated it in such a grand manner for 18 years. My mother passed away 18 years ago during my birth month, and so I have always been despondent and withdrawn during this time of the year. But, my children are eager to make changes, and I can never deny them.
What are you most grateful for?
Omar Sani: I am most grateful for the love I have earned from so many people. However, I have not yet earned a National Film Award for my work yet. When my career was at its prime, the forum for The National Film Award was closed for 8 years, so I have missed my chance!
Many new actors are now following the journey you had taken once. Whose work do you admire most?
Omar Sani: To be honest, I have not seen a noteworthy performer since Shakib Khan. There are a couple that are emerging, but only time will test their endurance.
